Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where members of local communities, with the support and supervision of their local police, record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices.
Registered keepers of vehicles breaking the speed limit are contacted by letter explaining the potential risks and consequences of their dangerous behaviour.
Repeat offenders receive a visit from the local police and could face criminal prosecution.
We believe that running a Community Speedwatch will have multiple benefits:
Raising awareness of the new speed limits in the area
Gathering data on speeding in Nether Edge and Sharrow that we can take to councillors, council groups and the police to demonstrate the problems and fight for change
Affecting behaviour by making it visible that speed is being monitored and recorded
Community Speedwatch is volunteer-led and without volunteers it won't happen. If you have concerns about speeding near you and want to do something about us then why not volunteer. Drop us an email to offer your help. There is some online training to complete and then some in-person practical training.
We have selected a shortlist of roads that we believe have the most concerning levels of speeding within Nether Edge and Sharrow. These sites need to be submitted to the Police for approval before we can monitor there. If you have somewhere in mind that you think speeding is particularly bad then let us know. Shortlisted are:
Barkers Road, Lyndhurst Road
Montgomery Road
Rundle Road
Chelsea Road
Union Road
Psalter Lane
Kingfield Road
Osborne Road
Washington Road
Sharrow Lane
