Our Shared Streets was started as a subgroup of the Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group which serves the local area (Brincliffe, Nether Edge and Sharrow in Sheffield). We were set up to give a voice to the local area in matters related to the use of our streets and are responsible to NENG. The stakeholders of our sub-group are residents, workers, students, businesses, schools, churches and voluntary groups within the local area.
We will work towards rebalancing the needs and wants of different street users to improve the street experience in a more equitable way.
We intend to become a focal point through which residents can express their ideas and needs for the public spaces we share.
We intend to facilitate and improve communication between all stakeholders in the public spaces of Nether Edge.
Our goal is to improve the street environment of Nether Edge and to promote its safe and considerate use. We intend to contribute towards making Nether Edge a healthy environment both physically and mentally in which to live and work. We want more journeys to and from Nether Edge to be by walking, cycling and by wheeling when they can, and to make it safer for those who choose to travel like this.
We value the health and safety of all street users, especially the safety of those who walk, cycle and wheel.
We view the streets as residential neighbourhoods first rather than commuting routes.
We aim to improve the local environment aesthetically and practically while supporting the wider environmental battle against climate change.
We work towards our goals by:
Gathering qualitative and quantitative data concerning street use in our local area. Methods for this include direct communication with those who live in and use the streets, ad hoc surveys, the monitoring of traffic and the recording of incidents and accidents related to street use.
Facilitating communication between and liaising with different groups of street users in our local area and relevant authorities, politicians, councillors and voluntary bodies (eg Living Streets)
Developing projects to directly improve and rebalance the sharing of our streets
Identifying common ground and purpose between different street users
